Working with a number of First Nations, and with support from Yukon government's Economic Development department, YITIS (now TechYukon) organized and hosted a day and a half summit on subjects of interest to First Nation government IT practitioners. Four discussion areas were security, operations, recruitment and training, and systems management. Eleven First Nations sent representatives to the event, which was also attended by a large number of local IT companies. The focus was on face-to-face, practical discussion of key issues in IT management. The consensus at the end of the event was that the exercise had been very profitable, particularly since so many of the First Nation IT practitioners usually have so little opportunity to meet and converse with each other. A second such summit--possibly for the fall of the coming year, and this time hosted in a rural community--is already under consideration.
